EcoboardŽ is not a one for one replacement for wood and is not intended for any structural application. Ecoboard does not warrant, either expressed or implied, any uses beyond those designated by Ecoboard. Carefully read the installation instructions below and test to insure that the product will perform satisfactorily for your application.

1. General Information for Owners
EcoboardŽ is a low maintenance product that cannot be painted, stained, or sealed. Ultra violet stabilizers are added to EcoboardŽ to protect the color fastness, however any fading of color can manually be removed through simple power washing. Clean with soapy water.

2. General Information for Installers
EcoboardŽ should be kept out of direct sunlight just prior to installing; cover with a tarp if shaded area is not available. Ideal installation temperatures are 40 - 75 degrees. See Technical Data for specifications and Design considerations below for further details.

EcoboardŽ uses nontoxic additives to reduce weight, increase strength and mechanical properties. The center of the board will hold all fasteners. Light sanding with belt sander will smooth the end of the board if desired.

3. Tools
EcoboardŽ can be cut, drilled, mitered, and sanded with conventional woodworking tools. Carbide tipped saw blades with fewest teeth are recommended.

4. Fasteners

  • Decking - Stainless Steel Square Head # 10 decking screws are highly recommended.
    • Pre-drilling is required on all Decking boards if screws are not self-tapping.
    • All fasteners should be placed no closer than 1" from any edge nor protrude from any board closer than 1" form any edge.
  • Bulk Heading - Pre-Drilling is required when using 40 or 60 penny nails. Whaler spacing should be 36" or less for 2" x 10" and 60" or less for 3" x 10" boards.

5. Design Considerations

  • Board Spacing - EcoboardŽ will expand and contract linearly, per the following values:

    Structual Plastic Lumber
    Use 0.00004 in/in/deg F
This can be calculated by board size as shown by the following examples:

  • 5/4 x 6 x 12' = approximately 1/4" over a 30°F change in temperature.
  • 2 x 6 x 12' = approximately 1/3" over a 30°F change in temperature.  Spacing between boards is at the discretion of the consumer.
  • Spans - Decking -Suggested decking span is 16" on center for both the 5/4" and 2"x 6" boards for the designs shown below. Call for technical evaluation on alternative designs.
  • Railings - Posts for railings should be no more than 4 feet apart and lag bolted to the fascia beam or joist - Do Not Notch Posts! Snow rail designs must be supported every 2 feet with blocker piece to avoid possible sagging. See below for design criteria.

Before starting any building project be sure to check with the proper governing agencies or Associations for any approvals, permits or covenants that may apply to your home.

EcoboardŽ Design Recommendations for Decking and Railings

Decking General Notes
The maximum span is 16" on center for conventional designs.  Spacing between boards are at the customer preference.

  1. Parkay Style
  2. Herringbone Style
  3. Plank Style - Diagonal

Railing General Notes
EcoboardŽ posts should be spaced no more than 4' apart.

  • EcoboardŽ posts should be bolted to the deck fascia. Do Not Notch on the bottom.
  • EcoboardŽ rails and topcaps should not be butted to the posts.
